The Kentucky Diabetes Network, its members and collaborators have undertaken numerous successful endeavors and received awards for their efforts including:

Successes

  • KDN hosted a very successful 15th Annual Diabetes Day at the Capitol on February 6, 2014 in partnership with the American Diabetes Association, the KIPDA Diabetes Rural Health Coalition and other partners. Advocacy efforts of KDN and other partners resulted in $2.6 million for each year of the 2014-2016 biennium to support diabetes services through the local and district health departments. This is a huge victory and will greatly improve access to diabetes education and resources throughout the state. (2014)
  • Selected, among the 50 states, to share experience and knowledge related to planning and coalition work for inclusion in a national training module series, Planning Fundamentals, which was commissioned by the Division of Diabetes Translation at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These modules were released in January 2014 to provide training to CDC funded diabetes programs and their partners across the nation. (January 2014)
  • Featured on the September Partner Spotlight for the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) for use of the NDEP materials on the KDN website. See the story here. (September 2014)

  • KDN was part of the coalition related work in Kentucky selected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for inclusion in a new publication to be released soon - Effective Public Health Strategies to Prevent and Control Diabetes: A Compendium

  • KDN member and local endocrinologist, Dr. Stephen L. Pohl, MD, and the Chronic Disease Branch Epidemiologist, Teri Wood, PhD, wrote, submitted and had an article entitled, “ Kentucky’s Diabetes Epidemic: Challenges for the Kentucky Health Care System”, published in the KY Medical Association Journal.(November 2011)
  • Worked with the Kentucky Educational Television (KET) staff in partnership with the KY Diabetes Prevention and Control Program staff to determine content for the studio and field segments, and other program details on the first episode of a new KET series, “Health Three60,” which premiered on September 12 with seven additional broadcasts during September and October. This series of hour-long programs presents three sides of an issue in 60 minutes through a mix of studio and documentary segments. The first episode, "The New Face of Diabetes", examined the soaring rate of type 2 diabetes, its causes, controls, and prevention. (Fall 2011)

  • Quarterly publication/distribution of Kentucky Diabetes Connection Newsletter in partnership with the four KY Diabetes Educator Local Networking Groups, the American Diabetes Association, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Kentuckiana Endocrine Club and the KY Diabetes Prevention and Control Program. (Since January 2005)
  • Annual Diabetes Symposium in partnership with the four KY Diabetes Educator Local Networking Groups and the KY Diabetes Prevention and Control Program. (Since 2006)
  • Annual Diabetes Day at the Capitol in partnership with the American Diabetes Association. Each year priority policies and/or policy maker messages have been identified with training provided to build and strengthen skills for educating policy makers. KDN has been one of the driving forces for passage of numerous health-related policies in the Commonwealth as noted at add link for this information on the advocacy workgroup page. (Since 1999)

Awards and Honors

  • By invitation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Division of Diabetes Translation, three KDN partners and the Kentucky Diabetes Prevention and Control staff were interviewed and filmed by CDC discussing pearls of wisdom for three topics related to strategic planning. Clips from the interviews will be used in developing an online course (Planning Fundamentals) to provide practical guidance for diabetes programs and other state chronic disease/health promotion programs and their partners across the nation.   • Received the Frankie Award in the “Use of Media to Promote National Diabetes Education Program” category in recognition of innovative use and promotion of ABCs (A1C, blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking cessation) of diabetes messages and materials. The total exposure to the ABCs message was 27,809,604!! (2011)
  • Received the Frankie Honorable Mention Award category for Collaborative Partnerships using the National Diabetes Education Program Resources. (2010)
  • Received a certificate of recognition for having met the Healthy People 2010 target of demonstrated success in increasing the percentage of persons with diabetes who receive two or more A1C measures. (2006)
  • Received the Public Policy Award given by the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (2006)
